The deposits of the Upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian ZobingFormation in Lower Austria have been studied by a widerange ofsedimentological methods in several limited outcrops. Fourfacies associations were identified: (a) non-channelizedfinegrained deposits; (b) channelized sandstones, (c)non-channelized conglomerates, and (d) channelizedconglomerates. Non-channelized fine-grained sediments areinterpreted as deposits in shallow, semi-permanent pools onfloodplains. Channelized sandstones are associated with fluvialprocesses and mostly represent crevasse channels cut into thefloodplains. Channelized conglomerates originated fromcoarse-grained confined and hyperconcentrated flows.Non-channelized conglomerates are interpreted as sediments ofalluvial fan and alluvial plain systems. A terminal fluvialsystem developed under a semi-arid to arid climatic regime issupposed to be the depositional environment of the ZobingFormation.
