Can we call an author columnist? The answer can be both yes and no for this question. Both the author and columnist write in a newspaper periodically to reach their readers, so the answer is yes. However, these two persons belong to different times and different social climates. For example, the author receives training from a teacher in rüştiye (Ottoman junior high school), whereas the columnist has a teacher in the secondary school. Such contrasts in life that comes and goes make a difference between the author and columnist. This study attempts to compare “Evrak-ı Eyyam” by Cenab Şahabettin, an author of the old times, and “Kopuk Kopuk” by Çetin Altan, a modern day columnist. Both books are compiled from the newspaper articles of the writers. Both writers communicate their impressions of the time they lived in from their own points of view. Studying the columns, themes, language and style of two journalists who have an age gap of half a century will allow us to approach our changed life from the perspective of language and literature.
