Halid Ziya Uşaklıgil is one of the most important author in Servet-i Fünun movement. He started his literary studies before this movement. He is familiar with Europian literature since his first literary works. Halid Ziya Uşaklıgil’s book named “Hikâye” is an important theoretical work. This book is a theory of Europian realism and first serialized in 1887-1888, then puplished in 1891 as a book. Halid Ziya evaluated realism and romanticism comparatively in this book. He explained the basis, methods, and principles of realism, gave examples from realistic works. He conveyed summaries from some realistic books and evaluated these books. On the other hand, Halid Ziya puts his theoretical perspectives based on this book in a methodical way in his fictional works. Accordingly, “Hikâye” is an important theoretical book. Halid Ziya made important contributions to the development of novel and realism in Turkish literature history with this book.
