Although Brazilian law prohibits the practice of abortion in several cases, researches indicate that Brazilian women are still looking for ways to terminate pregnancy. This article discusses the voluntary termination of pregnancy, mainly through the data analysis from the 2016 Pesquisa Nacional do Aborto [National Abortion Survey] (PNA), also in criminal law. It seeks to understand how materialistic researchers, among historians and philosophers, elaborated on the issue of termination of pregnancy and the problems involving reproduction and sexuality within the capitalist system, as well as its meaning for the persistence of gender oppression. Coming to the conclusion that the criminalization of abortion does not prevent the practice, but keeps pregnancy as a biological destination for all women, but for those who form the basis of capitalist society, they experience unwanted motherhoods and the lethality of illegal abortion.
