Background: Application of series compensators at long-distance power transmission lines may cause electrical power system oscillatory instability. Automatic excitation control, as a whole, enhances the power engineering system stability. However, incorrect selection of automatic excitation control regulation factors may lead to undesirable stability problems. The known works normally consider the influence of only one controlled device on the stability of the electric power system. The objectives of this study are to analyze the influence of selecting automatic excitation control and series compensators regulation factors upon the steady-state stability of the electrical power system and to develop a method that will account for a combination of these parameters and will not result in system instability. И. Ленина» 28 Materials and methods: A.M. Lyapunov’s first approximation method was used to form a simplified mathematical model. Oscillatory stability regions were obtained by using twoand three-parameter D-decomposition method. As a simulation tool, we used the developed software in the C++ programming language. Results: A method has been developed for obtaining stability regions according to the transient behavior under shortterm mode variation. The method is different from the known ones as it accounts for both the electromechanical and electromagnetic transients in the system. We have also determined the variation ranges of series compensators and automatic excitation control regulation factors for operation conditions when using both a more complete and a simplified model of the electric power system. A trend has been revealed that the stability regions change as a function of automatic excitation control regulation parameters if the series compensator control action is increased. Conclusions: It is possible to use the simplified model for selecting the control factors for an automatic excitation controller as the stability region obtained by such simplified model belongs to the stability region obtained by the more complete model. However, the use of the simplified model for analyzing oscillatory stability in an existing network is inexpedient as it produces a large stability boundary position discrepancy with the results of the computational experiment using the more complete model (multi fold discrepancy). For a more accurate identification of the stability boundary, a more complete mathematical model is required.
