Background: Tropical grasses, such as elephant grass, have high moisture content when they have good productivity and are in the appropriate phenological state for silage. This hinders proper preservation in the silo and causes a reduction in the nutritive value of silage, owing to secondary fermentation and the production of effluents. A possible solution is the use of additives with high dry matter content. Objective: The goal of this study was to determine the effects of the inclusion of murumuru meal (0%, 7%, 14%, 21%, and 28%, depending on the natural matter of the ensiled mass) on the fermentative characteristics, microbiological activity, aerobic stability, and chemical composition of elephant grass silages. Methods: A completely randomized design with five treatments and five replicates was used. Elephant grass was collected at 60 d of age, minced, and homogenized with murumuru meal. The mass was placed in experimental silos with a 15 L capacity. After 45 d, the silos were opened and the samples were collected for laboratory analysis. Results: There was a reduction (p<0.05) in effluent production as the proportions of the murumuru meal in silage increased. A quadratic effect (p<0.05) was observed on dry matter recovery. There was an increase (p<0.05) in dry matter content, a decrease (p<0.05) in the neutral detergent fiber content, and an increase (p<0.05) in the non-fibrous carbohydrate content with the inclusion of murumuru meal. Conclusions: The addition of murumuru meal improved the chemical composition and did not affect the fermentative characteristics of elephant grass silage, while it reduced losses primarily from effluents. However, the inclusion of murumuru meal in the elephant grass silage decreased the time of aerobic stability.
