The Simple Certificate Validation Protocol (SCVP) defines anextensible means of delegating the development and validation ofcertification paths to a server. It can be used to support thedevelopment and validation of certification paths well after theexpiration of the certificates in the path by specifying a time ofinterest in the past. The Evidence Record Syntax (ERS) definesstructures, called evidence records, to support non-repudiation ofexistence of data. Evidence records can be used to preserve materialsthat comprise a certification path such that trust in the certificatescan be established after the expiration of the certificates in thepath and after the cryptographic algorithms used to sign thecertificates in the path are no longer secure. This document describesan application of SCVP to serve this purpose using the WantBackfeature of SCVP to convey evidence records.
