The start-up process of a pilot-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was evaluated for the treatment of intensive pig farming wastewater. The reactor was inoculated with a mix of granular and flocculent sludge, from two UASB reactors treating brewery wastewater, and swine wastewater sediments. In the start-up process the organic loading rate applied to the system was increased stepwise by decreasing the dilution ratio of the swine wastewater in a three-stage process. By the final stage of the start-up process no dilution was applied to the wastewater. The average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency in the reactor at the final stage of the start-up was 83,7% while working with an average organic loading rate of 2,4 kg COD.m-3.d-1. At the final stage of the start up the average total suspended solids concentration in the reactor’s influent reached 2786 mg SST.L-1 and did not affect the COD removal efficiencies negatively.
