The current state of the fight against extremism in Russia reflects the most important areas of domestic criminal policy, essentially is the focus of the problems of society and the state, and requires the search for the most important directions of prevention of extremist manifestations. An analysis of publications on the causes of youth extremism in Russia reveals a tendency to find extremist aspirations primarily in the age characteristics of the subjects of this extremism, without linking the issue to factors of the material life of society in general and its young part in particular. When deciding on the prevention of extremism among youth, it is necessary to take into account the results of law enforcement agencies’ activities initiated by the adopted program documents. The activities are specific in nature; they can follow the scheme of influencing the factors of youth extremism “at any cost” and the scheme of influencing the factors that require minimal organizational material costs. The article provides a critical assessment of the simple enumeration of the causes of youth extremism without linking them into a system and highlighting systemic factors. The unsatisfactory use of the methodological tools for carrying out research on the problems of youth extremism is noted. The relationship between the concepts of nationalism and extremism is considered; the constructive and destructive aspects of extremism as a natural human factor, which should be taken into account in organizing youth extremism prevention, are noted. The potential and methodology of using foreign and regional experience in the prevention of youth extremism are analyzed. A methodological block of research on contemporary problems of youth extremism in the Russian Federation is proposed.
