Background. Research on the quality of life is an indispensable part of medical therapy as it provides knowledge about the patient or a group of patients and their immediate family members, and helps assess how they deal with the disease. Objectives. The aim of the study was to assess selected aspects of the quality of life of patients with colorectal cancer and their family members. Material and methods. The research material was obtained from September to December 2013. The study group consisted of 105 patients with diagnosed colorectal cancer and their 105 family members. A survey method with 2 questionnaires was used (1 for the patient and 1 for the family member). Results. Duration of the disease significantly influenced patients’ quality of life (p = 0.01). Fourty-eight (45.71%) of the interviewed patients admitted to their prevailing fear, sadness and depression, and 42 (40%) declared that these feelings accompanied them from time to time. Fourty-seven (44.76%) of the examined patients and 22 (20.95%) of the examined family members confirmed the reduction of social contacts because of cancer. All of 47 (43.81%) of the surveyed patients considered their marriage to be “the same as before”, and 38 (36.19%) of the patients and 53 (50.48%) of the surveyed family members did not notice any changes in their relationship with their children. Moreover, 58 (55.24%) of the examined patients and 78 (74.29%) of the examined family members did not confirm changes in their occupational status due to the disease. Conclusions. The duration of the disease has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients with colorectal cancer. The disease did not significantly affect the respondents’ family and working life, but it limited their social contacts.
