Background. A person taking care of a family member with MS is emotionally, physically, financially, and socially affected, which can causes a variety of problems. Objectives. The study was aimed to identify the biopsychosocial problems of families taking care of a family member with multiple sclerosis. Material and methods. The study group consisted of 76 people who were taking care of their family member suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS). The questionnaire designed by the authors was used to ask questions that referred to the difficulties faced by the caregivers. Results. It has been shown that tiredness was the most difficult problem faced by the caregivers (78.9%). Respondents that took care of the ill family member for 11–15 years declared significantly more problems compared to those who had supported their relative for a shorter period (p = 0.003). Analysis of the survey data revealed that the fear of deterioration in quality of life among the MS patients has a strong impact on the practical implementation of patient care (69.7%). The highest percentage of caregivers (56%) in the group taking care of the ill family member for more than 15 years accepted the fact that the caregivers have to neglect their own health care needs in order to assist their family member. In terms of social role performance, caregivers reported a number of dysfunctions, such as: lack of self-realisation and lack of possibility to execute their vocational plans (32.1%). Conclusions. Difficulties related to taking care of patients with MS faced by caregivers are multidimensional. Tiredness and neglecting their own health turned out to be the main problem causing most of the difficulties. In the social dimension, persons surveyed reported lack of self-realisation and lack of possibility to execute their vocational plans as the dominant dysfunctions.
