Background. Work among suffering people requires from nurses and nursing students a high level of qualifications and professional competence. One should not choose the nursing profession by chance, as the decision calls for mature consideration and needs to be prosocially motivated. Objectives. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of motives for and satisfaction with the choice of a study field on the empathy levels in nursing students. Material and methods. This survey-based study involved 322 nursing students of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. The study tool was a two-part questionnaire. The first part consisted of questions regarding socio-demographic details, motives for choosing the study field, and the satisfaction with the studies. The second part comprised the Empathic Understanding of Others Questionnaire by Węgliński. Results. For the majority of students (52.17%) the choice of the study field was a deliberate and independent decision, whereas in 32.92% the choice was dictated by a conviction that obtaining a degree will guarantee them jobs. Empathy levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in those for whom it was a deliberate choice (65.64) than in those for whom the job security was the motive (62.95). Most students were satisfied (87.89%) or fairly satisfied with the choice of the study field. However, 12.11% of the respondents were either dissatisfied or not capable to evaluate the level of satisfaction. Empathy levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in those satisfied with the choice (65.79) in comparison with those unsatisfied or undecided (60.13). Conclusions. Motives for and satisfaction with the study field choice affect empathy levels in nursing students. Students who made a deliberate, independent choice of the study field showed higher levels of empathy than those who chose nursing because of guaranteed employment. Empathy levels were significantly higher in the individuals satisfied with the study field choice.
