Congenital malformation means any anatomical abnormality in a child present at birth, although not always diagnosed in fetal or neonatal period. Congenital anomalies are found in about 3% of live births, with 10% stillborn, and more than 50% of aborted fetuses in early pregnancy. Lethal defect involves severe developmental abnormalities of uncertain or poor prognosis for survival. The diagnosis of severe, lethal congenital defects in the fetus is extremely aggravating. After diagnosis, parents and specialists have two choices: to continue the pregnancy or abort it in accordance with applicable law. The aim of the article is to present the role of a midwife in the care of pregnant women with diagnosed prenatally lethal defect in the fetus based on a model of perinatal hospice. The authors emphasize that a midwife is an important member of the therapeutic team who takes care of the whole family expecting a birth of a seriously ill child with poor prognosis. The article also describes the role and responsibilities of different specialists during the therapy with an emphasis on the role of a midwife (Piel. Zdr. Publ. 2016, 6, 1, 57–61).
