The history behind the development of the “research university” is long and rich. We can see the first signs of such an institution in the establishment of the University of Bologna and the University of Paris in the 1300s. While Bologna was established primarily as a professional school (law and medicine) and Paris grew out of ecclesiastical schools of the 12 century, after the Great Schism of 1378 these and other institutions came to encompass faculties of art, theology, law and medicine.
