The present contribution is part of a project entitled “Language and Identity in the Mediterranean in Multilingual Settings” (EA 739 Dipralang). It deals with sociolinguistic representations. We interviewed Turkish workers and students living in the south of France about the languages they speak. With the aim of elucidating their attachment to languages and their feelings of belonging to social groups, we sought to assess their respective relationships with Turkish (their mother tongue, but a minority language in this context) and with French (here, the dominant language). To better understand how cultural alterities are constructed, we have also endeavoured to ascertain how the sociolinguistic representations involved might influence language and identity.
