Despite the increasing sophistication of American literary theory, its growing assimilation of European critical concepts, whether Phenomenologist, Structur alist, or Marxist, and its exciting debates on hermeneutics and communication theory in the pages of New Literary History or Diacritics or Po?tique, the prac tical criticism of contemporary poetry continues to be largely a matter of old fashioned explication.
