As i ncreased cross-cul- tural commun i cat i on and mob i l i ty lowers the barr i ers of i nteract i on, many argue that local cultural norms w i ll i nev i tably g i ve way to global standards, as def i ned by globally lead i ng cultures such as the Amer i cans. In th i s paper I take a cr i t i cal look at the i dea of converg i ng cultural norms between two countr i es, Germany and the Un i - ted States. Draw i ng on S i mmel’s theory of face-to-face i nteract i on and Kurt Lew i n’s analys i s of German-Amer i can d i fferences, I f i nd that for three key levels of i nteract i on —self-d i sclosure i n the stranger-to-member passage, conversat i on style, and the cons- truct i on of fr i endsh i p— character i st i c German versus Amer i can norms of i nteract i on pers i st w i th l i ttle ev i dence of convergence.
