Mali constitutes an interesting example as regards cereal production for the market. In spite of two main pools of cereal production (the Niger Office for the rice and the cotton area in the South for dry grain), some areas are in a situation of chronic cereal insecurity. This situation raises the question of the cereal market's contribution and, beyond that, of the decision-making of rural producers. How is arbitration between on-farm consumption and marketed products carried out? What are determiners? What are their impacts on cereal availability? To answer these questions, we undertook several investigations in 2010 and 2011 in several rural municipalities of these two zones, in the context of growing civil insecurity. These studies made it possible to confirm that there is no correlation between cereal availability and cereal sales. As regards the cereal offer, the decisive factors are linked less to structures of production than to contextual situations.
