A kinematic plastic solution has been developed for\udground movements around a shallow, unlined tunnel\udembedded within an undrained clay layer. In this solution,\udthe pattern of deformation around the tunnel is\udidealised by a simple plastic deformation mechanism.\udWithin the boundaries of the deformation mechanism,\udthe soil is required to shear compatibly and continuously\udwith no relative sliding at the boundaries. The soil is\udregarded here as a rigid plastic (Tresca) material. The\udplausibility of the proposed mechanism is demonstrated\udby comparison with limit analysis calculations and centrifuge test results
