Assuming that the reaction takes place in the diffusion model and that it is in the second order with regard to the sulfur content of oil, the following equation of the reaction rate expressing a scale effect, was found in agreement with the previously obtained results, r=KTHu0.23•η1.3•W2 where, KT=reaction rate constant; Hu=holdup; η=solubility of hydrogen in the oil; and W=sulfur content in the reactor.As the flow of residual oil in a hydrodesulfurization reactor was simulated by the air-water system, the holdup of oil was estimated from that of water.The influence of the reactor bed height, size of catalyst, total pressure and space velocity of oil was discussed in view of their effects upon enlarging the scale of the system.
