Porous siliceous materials have extremely interesting nanoscale architectures with the potential for specific functions. Voids in these materials have extensive and significant roles in petrochemical processes, environmental applications and other technologies1)~7). Other advantages of these materials include unique and tunable pore structures, unusual surface topologies, large surface areas, adsorption and condensation properties, and transparency to UV and visible light. Porous siliceous materials can be generally classified based on pore size into three categories (Fig. 1): microporous (mean pore diameter less than 2 nm), mesoporous (between 2 nm and 50 nm) and macroporous (greater than 50 nm). These materials can be obtained by selection of the template materials and precursors, and control of the synthesis conditions. Various porous siliceous materials such as fibers, hollow spheres, core shells, flakes, tubes, and thin films have recently been manufactured with unique properties due to advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology8)~14).
