Fuel cell systems can generate clean primary power for stationary and mobile source applications. In addition, fuel cell co-generation systems can generate electric power and heat resulting in highly efficient energy source utilization. The advantages of the stationary fuel cell co-generation system are reduced transmission loss and waste heat recovery as steam and warm water. Therefore, the fuel cell co-generation system has many benefits for residential use1). Power generation by the fuel cell consumes oxygen in air and hydrogen. Hydrogen is obtained by steam reforming of natural gas. Pipeline distribution of natural gas is one of the most useful existing infrastructures for stationary application of fuel cell systems. Pipeline natural gas contains a small amount of sulfurcontaining odorants to immediately alert the public to gas leakages because natural gas is colorless and odorless. Various several sulfur compounds are used as odorants, including thiols ( t-butanethiol (TBT, C4H9SH), methanethiol (CH3SH), and others), sulfides (dimethyl sulfide (C2H6S), diethyl sulfide (C4H10S), and others), carbonyl sulfide (COS), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). TBT is commonly used as an odorant for pipeline distribution of natural gas. However, sulfurcontaining compounds like TBT are severe poisons of reforming catalysts2)~4). Therefore, such sulfur compounds must be removed from the natural gas before the steam reforming process. Removal of sulfur-containing compounds from crude oil and gas fuels is achieved by the catalytic hydrodesulfurization (HDS) process operated at high temperatures (300-450 °C) using a CoMo/Al2O3 catalyst under high pressure hydrogen at 3-5 MPa5)~7). HDS is highly efficient for removing sulfur compounds8)~11). However, the HDS process is difficult to apply to fuel cell applications for residential use which require quick and easy start-up and simple operation. Therefore, methods for easy and efficient sulfur removal from pipeline natural gas operating at low temperatures and normal pressure are desirable. The adsorptive desulfurization (ADS) process can remove specified sulfur compounds at ordinary temperatures and pressure. Activated carbons are commonly used for the ADS process and are well known adsorbents for sulfur compounds12)~18). Zeolites are also often used as sulfur adsorbents19)~22). Adsorptive removal of sulfurcontaining odorants on (Ag, Na)-Y type zeolite at ambient temperature and pressure was reported in our previous paper23).
