Production of clean diesel fuels by ultra-deep hydrodesulfurization (HDS) has recently become more important due to the introduction of legislation requiring strict diesel emission controls. Particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) trap systems combined with ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) maximize the effi ciency of PM and NOx emissions reduction and promote trap/ catalyst durability. Furthermore, clean diesel vehicles, which produce less CO2 than gasoline vehicles, are important to combat global warming, so ULSD will also contr ibute to the reduct ion of CO2 emiss ions . Governments in many countries are introducing regulations to reduce sulfur levels in diesel fuels to ultra-low levels1)~4). The mandatory sulfur content of diesel in Japan will be less than 10 parts per million (ppm) sulfur content in 2007, but most Japanese refi ners voluntarily made a complete switch to <10-ppm sulfur diesel in January 2005. Furthermore, many other countries are planning to require ULSD with a maximum sulfur level of 10-15 ppm in the near future. The US and Canada began requiring ULSD fuel defi ned as diesel containing less than 15 ppm for on-road use in June 2006. The EU is also progressing to ULSD. The sulfur level in the EU has already been reduced to 50-ppm sulfur in 2005, and will be further tightened to 10 ppm by 2009. Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd. was part of the national research project, the “Research and Development of Petroleum Refining Pollution Reduction,” organized by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Organization (NEDO) and the Japan Petroleum Energy Center (JPEC), and intended to develop a highly active HDS catalyst from 1999 to 2004. During this project period, Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd. successfully developed new CoMo HDS catalysts for the production of ULSD fuels. The present review summarizes the development of the ultra-deep HDS catalysts, C-605A and C-606A, with significantly higher activity than any other conventional CoMo HDS catalysts.
