Removal of sulfur from petroleum fractions is one of the most important issues for the resolution of current environmental problems. Commercial hydrodesulfurization (HDS) plants commonly use MoO3-based hydrotreating catalysts, because of the excellent performance as well as economic advantages1). In a previous paper, we reported that addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) can moderately improve HDS catalysts2). PEG is a viscous transparent water soluble organic compound (WSOC) with the structure of HO_(CH2OCH2)n_OH. The addition of PEG to the impregnation solution improved the HDS activity of CoO_MoO3/Al2O3 for dibenzothiophene and light gas oil (diesel). X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement suggested that addition of PEG results in better dispersion of cobalt and molybdenum on the alumina support through the blocking of aggregation of active metals during the drying and calcination steps. Recently, other WSOCs such as triethylene glycol and ethylene glycol were also reported to improve the HDS activity of CoO_MoO3_P2O5/Al2O3 for thiophene3). Phosphorus addition also improves the hydrotreatment activity of catalysts4), although excess addition of phosphorus rather decreases the dispersion of active metals5). In this study, the effect of PEG addition on NiO_MoO3/Al2O3 was investigated by XPS and X-ray diffraction (XRD), as NiO_MoO3/Al2O3 catalysts are also commonly used in conventional HDS units. The synergy effect of addition of PEG and phosphorus to NiO_MoO3/Al2O3 was also investigated.
