The Platinum Development Initiative (PDI) was officially started in April 1997, comprising Anglo Platinum, Impala Platinum, Lonmin (then Lonrho) and Mintek. The aim was to encourage new research into Pt-based alloys which would eventually lead to an increased use of Pt, by broadening the industrial base.
