Este estudio tuvo como objetivo comprender cómo las mujeres con hipertensión arterial viven el impacto del diagnóstico de esta enfermedad. Participaron diez mujeres con hipertensión arterial, de un programa de ejercicio, en un municipio del Estado de México, en el período de marzo a octubre de 2007. Para obtener los datos, se utilizó una entrevista semi-estructurada, de forma individual. Las entrevistas fueron analizadas según el referencial de análisis de contenido. A partir del análisis se originaron tres categorías: 1) De la alegría a la angustia 2) El momento en que la enfermedad es diagnósticada 3) Intentando adaptarse a una nueva vida cotidiana. Convivir con hipertensión arterial es algo que enfrentan estas mujeres, desde el momento que son diagnósticadas hasta tener que convivir diariamente con la enfermedad, situación que desencadena sentimientos de angustia y miedo. Este es un proceso de difícil adaptación. Este estudo teve como objetivo compreender como as mulheres com hipertensão arterial vivenciam o impacto deste diagnóstico. Participaram dez mulheres com hipertensão arterial de um programa de exercício em um município do Estado do México, no período de março a outubro de 2007. Para obtenção dos dados utilizou-se entrevista semiestruturada, de forma individual. As entrevistas foram analisadas segundo o referencial de análise de conteúdo de Bardin. Da análise, originaram-se três categorias 1) Da alegria à angústia; 2) No momento da notificação da doença; 3) tentando adaptar-se à nova vida cotidiana. A vivencia com a hipertensão arterial é algo que enfrenta, desde o momento da notificação até o convívio com a doença, fatos desencadeadores de sentimentos de angústia e medo. É um processo de difícil adaptação. The objective of the present study was to understand how women with hypertension were affected by the diagnosis of the disease. Ten women with hypertension, members of an exercise program in a municipality of the State of Mexico participated in this study, which took place from March to October of 2007. To obtain the data, a semi-structured interview was conducted, applied on an individual basis. The interviews were analyzed using the theoretical content analysis of L. Bardin. From the analysis of the data, three stages were observed: 1) The initial response, fear or anguish 2) The moment the illness is diagnosed. 3) The adaptation to the new life style. Hypertension is something that these women must cope with from the moment they are diagnosed with the illness and even as they deal with it on a daily basis. These factors generate different types of feelings, such as anguish and fear. These women are forced to handle this difficult process
