This paper deals with the debate happened between Bastiat and Proudhon in the pages of the Voix du Peuple newspaper over the legitimacy of the capital"s revenue. The first section presents an overview of France"s political situation in 1848, when the revolutionary turmoil deposes the monarchic regime and consolidates the socialist rethoric among the French laborers.After that, Bastiat and Proudhon"s theoretical positions are sketched as stated in their major opuses, locating them in the context of the liberal and socialist doctrines of the day. The third section introduces the initial contributions of Bastiat, Chevé and Proudhon on the capital and interest concepts. Next, the economic and methodological arguments of both authors concerning the possible conflict or convergence of interests among capitalists and workers in a profit orientated society are compared. The last section retrieves the discussion over Proudhon"s proposal of gratuitous credit that would be harshly criticized by Bastiat and would cause the debate to slip into the terrain of personal insults. The concluding remarks briefly evaluate the effective length of the mutual divergences between the two protagonists.
