Diferenças na tolerância das sementes de milho à alta temperatura de secagem têm sido relacionadas às características físicas do pericarpo. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar aspectos anatômicos do pericarpo de sementes de milho associados à tolerância das sementes a alta temperatura de secagem. Foram utilizadas sementes de híbridos simples e de seus híbridos simples recíprocos que apresentavam comportamento diferenciado quanto à tolerância aos danos por secagem. As sementes foram colhidas manualmente em espigas com teor de água em torno de 35% e secadas a 45°C até atingirem o conteúdo final de água de aproximadamente 8%. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes foi avaliada por meio do teste de germinação, teste de frio sem solo e envelhecimento acelerado. Seções de 20 mm foram feitas em micrótomo a -20 °C para a avaliação anatômica do pericarpo das sementes. Sementes de milho que apresentam estrutura do pericarpo mais densa, formada por células mais compactadas, são mais sensíveis à alta temperatura de secagem. Differences in seed tolerance to high drying temperature have been related to the physical characteristics of the pericarp. The objective of this research was to evaluate physical aspects of the pericarp that could be associated with tolerance to high drying temperature. Seeds from simple hybrids and their reciprocal simple hybrids that present differentiated behavior for tolerance by drying damage, were used. The seeds were harvested by hand on corn cobs with water content near 35% and dried at 45ºC to 8% water content. The physiological quality of the seeds was evaluated through the germination test, cold test without soil and accelerated aging. Twenty micron-thick sections were made with a freezing microtome at -20°C for pericarp physical assessment of the seeds. Corn seeds that present denser pericarp structure, formed by more compact cells, is more sensitive to high drying temperature
