Desde o início do século XX, os pesquisadores da educação se esforçam para apreender com rigor os efeitos da repetência. Os estudos feitos a esse respeito tiveram uma evolução importante, marcada pela melhora dos dispositivos e por uma sofisticação cada vez maior das técnicas de análise estatística. O objetivo desses trabalhos é circunscrever melhor o verdadeiro efeito da repetência, o que implica uma reflexão metodológica sobre a origem dos vieses e os métodos mais apropriados para controlá-los. Este artigo retoma essa evolução metodológica, comentando os principais resultados das pesquisas. Since the early 20th century, researchers on education have striven to fully understand the effects of student retention. The studies led to an important evolution characterized by the improvement of resources and by a greater sophistication of statistical analysis techniques. The purpose of these studies is to know better the true effect of student retention, which means a methodological reflection on the origin of biases and the most appropriate methods to control them. This article resumes this methodological evolution and comments on the main results of researches
