DOI: 10.1590/2179-8966/2019/43546 Resumo O presente artigo aborda o imaginario juridico brasileiro no inicio da Republica Velha tomando como chave-interpretativa a insurreicao popular do Arraial de Canudos. Utilizando como metodologia de interpretacao das fontes a relacao entre imaginacao e direito, a analise de elementos da cultura juridica no periodo e dos escritos de Antonio Conselheiro revela indicios da permanencia, as portas do seculo XX, de um imaginario juridico de fortes tendencias pre-modernas. Abstract The present paper addresses the Brazilian’s early Old Republic legal imaginary taking as key of reading the popular insurrection of the Camp of Canudos. Using the relation between imagination and law as methodology for the interpretation of the sources, the analysis of some elements of the legal culture on the studied period and of the Antonio Conselheiro’s manuscripts leads to evidences of the fixedness, almost at the 20 th  Century, of a legal imaginary with strong pre-modern tendencies.  Keywords:  Legal history; Legal imaginary; Camp of Canudos.

O beato rábula: traços de um imaginário jurídico no Arraial de Canudos
