(Received 10 January 2010 /Accepted 19 January 2010)The Monte Carlo Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code (PHITS) was used for diagnosing the focusingand defocusing action of a triplet of permanent magnet quadrupoles on laser-accelerated proton bunches of shortduration. ThecodepredictsreasonablywelltheobservedtransversebeamproleasmeasuredwithaCR-39trackdetector demonstrating that PHITS can be used to simulate proton bunch transport by conventional ion optics inthe laser-driven case.
