サリチオンは加熱により転位して2種類の異性体, S-メチル体とS-ベンジル体に変化した. 異性体はさらに熱分解して, それぞれの対応するスルフィドを生成する. ジメチルスルフィドのガス発生開始温度は, スミチオンの場合よりも低温度側にあった. 密閉系でのサリチオンの熱分解は自動触媒的に進行した. これは, 生成したスルフィド―とくにジメチル・スルフィド―が異性化を促進するためであると考えられた. サリチオンの熱安定化方法を検討し, 安定化の機構についても考察した. i)サリチオンの保存には, 気体透過性のある紙袋や, ポリエチレン袋が好ましい. ii)β-シクロデキストリンへの包接化や, iii)β-ナフチルアリルアミンの添加は, 安定化に効果があった.
