The purpose of this study was to analyze the age-dependence of the recognition of appearance by females and their appearance management behavior by conducting in-depth interviews. Female participants were grouped according to their age (8 groups in total): 5 and 6 graders in elementary school, middle school students, high school students, and women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. The interviews showed that younger females had more interest in their appearance, and their appearance management behavior was more diverse. The appearance management behavior of females younger than 30s was aimed at achieving beautiful appearance, whereas those older than 40s aimed at looking more youthful than their physical age. Also, for each age group were different the time of appearance recognition. This can be seen in the results according to differences in the historical background and experience of each age group.
