EX VITRO ACCLIMATIZATION OF ORNAMENTAL PINEAPPLE WITH DIFFERENT IRRIGATION FREQUENCIES 2 ABSTRACT The irrigation management during the acclimatization of micropropagated plants is one of the problems that many producers have faced throughout the years. The absence of technical and scientific information about ornamental plant water requirements has caused considerable losses and different kind of plants quality. This is not different for the ornamental pineapple ( Ananas comosus var. erectifolius (L. B. Smith) Coppens & Leal) which nowadays occupies the second position in the scale of exports of flowers and ornamental plants of the Ceara State. Considering its importance in the floriculture agribusiness and the lack of information about its management, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different irrigation frequencies in the micropropagated plants acclimatization. The research was carried out in a mesh (50% of shading) at Embrapa Tropical Agroindustry on Fortaleza, Ceara State (3o44' S, 38o33' W and 19.5 m). The plants were cultivated in 180 cm 3 pots that contained green coconut dust substrate with worm compost (3:1) and they were irrigated with a depth of 3 mm. The agronomic test variables were: the number of leaves, the largest width of the 3rd leaf, the largest diameter of the rosette (at 52 and 83 days after the transplant), and root and shoot fresh/dry masses. The experimental design was a randomized block with four treatments and five repetitions for the variables related to foliar development, and four treatments with four repetitions for the variables related to plant mass production. All repetitions contained eight plants. The treatments consisted of four irrigation frequencies in which the 3 mm depth was divided: once (3 mm), twice (1.5 mm), three (1 mm) and four (0.75 mm) times a day. The results demonstrated that frequencies of two, three and four daily irrigations provided ornamental pineapple micropropagated plants best development. Keywords: Ananas comosus var. erectifolius , microsprinkler, micropropagation.
