This paper addresses two potcnttal problems that arise -'hen mcasuring Fleirrell cost eMcienc}r using Iinear programining rnethods. First, when an optimal solution t,o the cost function a}Iows s]ack in the output censtraints that defiiie the t・eelmology it is possible to increase at least・ one output without increasing costs. Therefore, two firms might be deemed equa]]y cost eficicnt cvcn though one firrn produces more of at least one ouLput. Second, previous research has shown that when input prices vary across firins, it is possible for firms with higher costs to be deemed more cost eMcient, than firms who have lower costs, XNla prcseiit a new measure of cost eficieney that accounts for both of these potential probleins.
