This paper addresses the phenomenon of school humor, focusingon the question of how it contributes to shapingteacher-student relationships. Based on an analysis of textswritten by lower secondary school students, the paper showsthat humor at school serves contradictory functions, such asharmonizing teacher student relationships on the one hand, andenabling power negotiation aimed at gaining superiority on theother. Analysis of narrative data has identified a specificphenomenon of festive humor. Within its frame, teacher-studentrelationships nearly always tend to be harmonized.
