Our previous study multicenter study of intra-coronary angioscopy after stenting (MICASA) evaluated chronic angioscopic findings after implantation of bare metal stents (BMS) or first-generation and second-generation drug-eluting stents (1stand 2nd-DES). We found more homogeneous stent coverage by white neointima and less thrombus with 2nd-DES than 1stDES, corresponding with the better clinical outcomes in patients receiving 2nd-DES. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with an increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes resulting from more advanced systemic atherosclerosis compared to persons without DM. Patients with DM also have a high risk of in-stent restenosis, which is mainly induced by neointimal hyperplasia.
