The first dedicated, boat-based marine mammal\udsurveys in Cambodian coastal waters were conducted\udover seven discrete survey periods, spanning\udFebruary to September 2001. These surveys\udcovered the majority of Cambodian coastal waters,\udin addition to the main offshore islands.\udAs a result of these surveys, ten marine mammal\udspecies have now been confirmed to occur in\udCambodian waters. Six of these, the false killer\udwhale, a long-beaked form of common dolphin,\udpantropical spotted dolphin, dwarf spinner dolphin,\udIndo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin, and Indo-\udPacific humpback dolphin, constitute new country\udrecords for Cambodia. Additionally, a short-finned\udpilot whale was found live-stranded, constituting\uda further new country record. These initial results\udindicate that the current status of marine mammals\udin Cambodian waters is encouraging, both in terms\udof species diversity and abundance. Cambodian\udwaters appear to support regionally, if not globally,\udsignificant populations of several of these species.\udThe dugong is almost certainly the most highly\udthreatened marine mammal in the region.\udStudies to date have provided important baseline\udknowledge regarding the status, distribution, and\udimportant areas of occurrence for marine mammals\udin Cambodia. It is now essential that conservation\udand management strategies are developed\udand implemented. Public education and awareness\udand community-based management programs, as\udwell as stricter laws, regulations, and adequate\udenforcement will be essential to conserving the\udremaining marine mammal populations and ensuring\udtheir survival in Cambodian coastal waters
