Th e edition of antemortem documents of Eastern Orthodox and Uniate burghers of Vilnius in the fi rst half of the 18th century has been addressed previously. In the 19th century, the Vilnius Archeographic Committee under the auspices of the tsarist authorities issued a few last wills made by individuals belonging to the Eastern Orthodox and the Uniate elite of the city’s merchants1. However, the research omitted the registers of movables and documents confi rming individual legacies. For almost one and a half centuries, the edition of antemortem documents made by Eastern Orthodox inhabitants of Vilnius has been forgotten. Th e history of the city in this period has not been of particular interest for historians2. Th e abovementioned reasons mean that the present state of knowledge about this part of the Vilnius community is scarce, which justifi es the author’s eff ort to continue the editorial works given up a long time ago. It is hard to say how many Eastern Orthodox believers lived in Vilnius in the period under question. By the end of the 17th century, their number was decreasing owing to conversion to the Uniate Church, which provided them access to the city’s offi ces. From 1666 Orthodox believers were not allowed to be among the magistrate consisting of 24 members, the fi rst half of whom were Roman Catholics, while the other half were Uniates3.
