Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) is a well-approved technique to diagnoseincipient faults in liquid-filled transformers. It is usually performed by periodicallysampling liquids from power transformers and analyzing the dissolved gases inlaboratories. In the past decade, the emergence of multi-gas online monitors avails amuch timelier monitoring for transformers. However, it is still not certain whether themonitor readings are accurate and reliableand whether they agree with laboratoryresults. This raises additional concerns when applying natural esters in powertransformers. This paper comparatively studied the lab and online fault gasmeasurement results of a mineral oil and a natural ester under various faults, includingthermal faults, partial discharge faults andsparking faults. The results show that theonline gas measurement results agree with thelaboratory analysis generally within anerror of 30%. Gas leakage or air ingression might occur during the transport of liquidsamples for laboratory analysis. Therefore, liquid samples should be analyzed as soon assampled for laboratory analysis.
