Jelen tanulmányban magyar egyetemi hallgatók pesszimizmus-szintjét vizsgáltuk. Szerettük volna megtudni, hogy a pesszimizmus a konformitás szintjén jellemző-e ránk vagy intrinzik módon, belülről fakadóan vagyunk ilyen pesszimisták. A tanulmányban bemutatott kutatás itthon és külföldön (Bécsben) tanuló magyar (90 fő, átlagéletkor: 23,3 év; szórás: 2,18 év) és hazánkban és saját országukban (Ausztriában) tanuló külföldi egyetemista diák (60 fő, átlagéletkor: 22,2 év; szórás: 2,32 év) optimizmusának szintjét és szubjektív jóllétét hasonlítja össze. Az optimizmus mérésére indirekt és direkt — önbeszámolós — módszert is alkalmaztunk. Indirekt úton értelmezésekben és tervezett viselkedésválasztásokban való megnyilvánulásként ragadtuk meg az optimizmust, általunk szerkesztett ’félig-üres’ történetek segítségével. Direkt módszerként a Berni Szubjektív Jóllét Kérdőív pozitív attitűdöt mérő skáláját alkalmaztuk. Eredményeink szerint a magyar diákok mind saját [F(1,148) = 77,36; p<0,001], mind idegen környezetben szignifikánsan pesszimistábbnak mutatkoztak külföldi társaiknál. A közvetett optimizmusra vonatkozó eredményekkel szemben a pozitív attitűdre és szubjektív jóllétre vonatkozó önbeszámolókat a vizsgálat kulturális közege befolyásolta: a külföldön tanuló magyarok pozitívabbnak ítélték meg mentális jóllétüket [F(3,146) = 13,77; p<0,001] és pozitívabb élettel szembeni attitűdökről számoltak be, mint itthon élő társaik [F(3,146) = 11,33; p<0,001].			 | 				The study examines the so-called Hungarian pessimism. We wanted to find out if this pessimism is a conform cultural pattern or we, Hungarians are intrinsically so pessimistic. The hereby demonstrated research compares the level of optimism and subjective well-being of Hungarian students (sample size 90, mean age: 23.3; SD: 2.18) who are studying in Hungary and abroad (in Vienna), with foreign university students (sample size 60, mean age: 22.2; SD: 2.32) living in Hungary and in their own country (Austria). To assess optimism, we used indirect and direct methods as well. Indirectly we captured optimism in interpretations and in planned behavioral-patterns’ manifestations with the help of ‘half-empty’ situations, while agreements with statements on Positive Attitudes Scale of Berne Questionnaire on Subjective Well-Being served as direct data. According to our results, Hungarian students appeared to be significantly more pessimistic than their foreign mates in their home country and in Austria as well [F(1.148) = 77.36; p<.001]. In contrast with the results of indirect optimism, the self reported positive attitude and subjective well-being were influenced by cultural context of the examination: Hungarians studying in a foreign country judged their subjective well-being more positive than students living in Hungary [F(3.146) = 13.77; p<.001] and displayed more positive attitudes [F(3.146) = 11.33; p<.001]
