The impact of global university rankings on institutional strategies and sectoral policies is growing. Based on thorough methodological critiques, it appears that their performance evaluation relevance is not sufficient for this force. The study summarizes research showing that the explanation of this phenomenon is in the context of a change in the social perception of the academic world. On this basis, rankings are a media phenomenon of the postmodern mass-democracy of the university. By treating them in this way, on the one hand, they can evaluate the positions of individual universities and put them in a real relationship – an example of this is the study presenting the regional competitive landscape of Hungarian universities.
