In the advanced economies, the choice of university is one of the most important, irreversible decisions. As long as merely 3–5 per cent of a cohort went to universities, the subject matter had not much relevance at the societal level. This is one of the reasons why it took so long for mainstream economists to realize that this is not only a matter for the individuals, because universities play a paramount role in overall economic development and the fight against poverty. Once it is realised that universities are important because a large segment of the young cohorts is affected, than the comparison among universities and the ranking of universities is necessary.
