In recent years, there is a great deal of interest in distributed generations from viewpoints of environmental problem and energy saving measure. Thus, a lot of distributed generators will be connected to the distribution network in the future. However, increase of distributed generators which convert natural energy into electric energy is concerned on their adverse effects on distribution network. Therefore, power electronics based apparatus is considered in order to adjust the voltage profile, and as a result more distributed generations can be installed into the networks. In this paper, four types of FACTS devices, Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC), Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) and selfcommutated Back-To-Back (BTB), are evaluated by comparison of required minimum capacity of the inverters in a residential distribution network with a large penetration of photovoltaic generations. To make comparisons among FACTS devices, required minimum capacity is defined as a minimum capacity for avoiding voltage violations of the distribution network by large penetration of photovoltaic generations. A comparison of required minimum capacity in radial distribution network is shown in Fig. 1. Obviously, UPFC needs less capacity than STATCOM and SSSC. In this simulation, it can be said that injecting AC voltage via series transformer is effective for the voltage control of the distribution network. Fig. 1.
