This paper describes an experimental study on NO removal from a simulated exhausted-gas using repetitive surface discharges on a glass barrier subjected to polarity-reversed voltage pulses. The very fast polarity-reversal with 20 ns of rise time is caused by direct grounding of a 10m-long coaxial cable. Figure 1 shows an inside view of a plasma reactor. Three screw-rod electrodes are enclosed by two grounding planeelectrodes with 0.5 mm-thick glass barriers. NO molecules in a simulated exhausted-gas can be oxidized by repetitive pulsed-surface discharges from each ridge of three screws. In the first test, influence of voltage rise time on energy efficiency for NO removal is studied. Energy efficiency for the very fast polarity reversal caused by direct grounding without a matching resistance became higher than that for the slower polarity reversal caused by grounding through an inductor. Figure 2 shows Monitor signals for (a) fast polarity reversal due to direct grounding and for (b) slower polarity reversal due to grounding through the inductor. Very intense discharge light was observed at the initial stage for the fast polarity reversal, whereas the intensity in the initial discharge light for the slower polarity reversal was relatively faint. Energy efficiency for 50% NO removal ratio was up to 80 g/kWh for the fast polarity reversal, whereas it was less than 60 g/kWh for the slower polarity reversal. These results indicate that surface discharge due to positive streamer propagation within a few 10 ns at the front of the fast polarity reversal can produce many high energy electrons which play an important role for the chemical reaction of NO oxidation.
