Technologies in battery density and motor performance are improving, and new laws are being produced to allow Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in public airspace. As these progress the UAV market will see rapid growth. New applications of UAVs will push the boundaries of what modern electrical propulsion systems can handle. Beyond a basic understanding of function, little is publicly known about the performance of an electronic speed controllers (ESCs). Some manufacturers claim a near constant efficiency with throttle. In this paper, component based analytical model of performance is built for ESCs. A test bed is constructed to measure the intricate power signal out of the speed controller. This lead to the experimental performance measurement to compare with the analytical model.
