The aim of this paper is to analyze the political positioning of bishops of the ecclesiastical province of Toledo during the conflict between Henry IV and his brother Alfonso (1465-1468). To do this, first we will list the prelates under study (the bishops of Palencia, Segovia, Jaen, Cuenca, Osma, Siguenza y Cordoba). Second, we will examine how the bishops divided themselves ?between those supporting Henry (enriquenos) and those supporting Alfonso (alfonsinos), and the evolution of their allegiances throughout the three years of civil war. After determining their fealties, this study carries out an analysis of the motives that explain their choices and the aspects that influenced their decisions. To do so, a wide variety of factors are evaluated. Religious, ecclesiastical, economical, political, social and ideological reasons are considered. The ultimate goal is to understand the role that the Castilian episcopate played in this conflict, in order to offer new perspectives on this war and its context.
