compared to cells from WKY rats, which increasingly express TGF-ƒÀ1 and PDGF A-chain mRNAs. We have demonstrated production of angiotensin II (Ang II) with increased expression of angiotensinogen (ANG), cathepsin D and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) mRNAs in homogeneous cultures of VSMC from SHR, but not in cells from WKY rats, at early passages (3-5 th). We have recently found that VSMC from WKY rats also produce Ang II at late passage. The changes in contractile to synthetic phenotype of cells appear to develop the cytosolic apparatuses to produce proteinases, growth factors and cytokines. Current study was undertaken to investigate the relation of changes in phenotype by passages to expression of growth factors and endogenous production of Ang II in VSMC from WKY rats and SHR.
