Changes in circulating levels of gonadotropins were measured in immature mice neonatally treated with antisera to luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). On Day 5 of life the animals were injected with .1 ml antiserum to ovine FSH or .1 ml antiserum to ovine LH. LH levels in intact neonatal females peaked at about Day 14 of age and FSH levels were highest between Days 10-14. When antiserum to ovine LH was injected circulating levels of LH did not become detectable until Day 14 of age when about 47% of the circulating LH was neutralized. LH levels then gradually declined but remained higher than those in controls. When antiserum to ovine FSH was administered on Day 5 FSH levels were undetectable until Day 14 when 54% of plasma FSH was neutralized. FSH levels then increased about 3-fold over Day 14 levels on Days 17 and 21 and were 8 times greater than those in control animals at Day 21 of age. The results agree with histological observations that ovarian development at Day 14 of age is inhibited in similarly treated mice.
