The spermotoxicity of fresh rabbit serum as seen in various studies can be attributed to the activity of natural antibodies in conjunction with serum complement. When used in conjunction with guinea-pig serum heated rabbit serum showed pronounced spermotoxicity in an assay to induce antibodies to rabbit spermatozoa. Spermotoxicity was observed in all sera tested from 2 male and 17 female rabbits. These observations vary significantly from those of other investigations possibly because of slight differences in the procedures used or differences in the properties of the rabbit sera or complement sources. Higher hemolytic complement titres were observed in the more satisfactory sources when comparisons were made. Conclusions that the spermotoxicity of rabbit serum could be attributed to IgG in this assay are impossible.
